Bartow County is 45 miles northwest of metro Atlanta, in the scenic foothills of Georgia's Appalachian Mountains. The county's rich history dates back to 1000 A.D. with native American ceremonial mounds scattered throughout the county. This was home to the Cherokee Indian Nation- with the Creek Nation to the south. Bartow County was created from the Cherokee lands in 1832 and was originally named Cass County. It was renamed in 1861 in honor of Francis S. Bartow, the first brigade commander in the Confederate States Army to die in the Civil War. The original county seat was at Cassville, but after the burning of the county courthouse and the Sherman Occupation the seat moved to Cartersville. In fact, Sherman's Army annihilated Cassville and Etowah. The boll weevil had a tremendous effect on the county, with cotton growth the primary industry. Corn and wheat production helped, and textiles became an important industry. Today, Bartow County enjoys a strong economic base, made up of a diverse mixture of businesses and industries.
